Belarus’ proposals on informal UNGA meeting discussed in New York

MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) – Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations Andrei Dapkiunas met with President of the General Assembly of the United Nations Mogens Lykketoft at the UN headquarters on 11 March 2016 to discuss the progress in the preparation of a number of upcoming General Assembly events, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Minsitry of Foreign Affairs.

The informal meeting of the General Assembly is due on 15 Marc. Initiated by Belarus jointly with the Non-Aligned Movement, the meeting will discuss ways and means of further enhancement of the cooperation between the Permanent Missions of the UN Member States and the UN Secretariat. Andrei Dapkiunas briefed Mogens Lykketoft on the measures taken by Belarus and other stakeholders in the preparation for the meeting. In view of the importance and uniqueness of the theme, Andrei Dapkiunas suggested that the UN information center should provide a coverage of the event than it is usual for such events.

The Belarusian diplomat thanked the President of the General Assembly for proactive measures taken by the President’s Office in preparation of the special commemorative meeting of the General Assembly dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, and apprised him of the efforts of Belarus and its partners to organize other events dedicated to this anniversary.

In view of Belarus’ Chairmanship in the UN Eastern European Group (EEG) in April 2016, and in the light of the upcoming briefings of the General Assembly with the candidates running for the post of the next Secretary General of the United Nations, the parties discussed the possibility of the President’s attending a high-level EEG event with possible participation of the Eastern European candidates for the post of the UN Secretary General.
